Chinese Silver Panda coins and Medals.
Chinese Silver Panda are part of a series of silver bullion and proof coins issued by the People’s Republic of China. There design of the Panda (reverse side) changes every year with the exception of the 2001 and 2002 silver pandas which are identical.
Each year silver pandas are issued in different sizes and with different face values for each different sized coin. Their sizes range from 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2oz’s, 5 oz, 12 oz’s to 1 Kilogram.
The Chinese Silver Panda coin issues began with the minting of the Year 1983 Panda it was issued in proof with a precious metal content of 27 g., The years 1984 and 1985 followed in proof quality before for some unknown reason there was no issuance in the year 1986. Incidentally, the year 1985 saw the introduction on the first 5 oz medal. (The Silver Hong Kong Expo).
Proof quality coins continued in 1987 with the introduction of the 1 oz and 5 oz silver proof’s. In 1988 a 5 oz silver and a new size the 12 oz 100 Yuan coins were issued. From the years 1989 till present the China mints have continued to issue Silver Pandas in a variety of sizes and denominations.
Today the Chinese Silver Panda coin series continues to attract investors and collectors alike. In 2015 the Mints introduced for the first time coins with only the Giant Panda and face value on the reverse side. The “1oz, 5oz, 12 Ag.999” long associated with Panda coins was removed.
More recently, the 2016 Panda coins are confirmed to have gone metric. Also returning are the weight and metal content.
Additional, there are many different varieties, date differences as well as frosting differences on Panda coins and medal. There are also colored pandas, gilded pandas, privy marked as well as gold plated issues.
Chinese Pandas make great investments. With precious metals prices having cooled down from the 2010-12 highs. It looks to be an idea time to start or upgrade a collection.
