The 4th Macau Lunar Coin Series (2020-2031) is issued by the Monetary Authority of Macau and exclusively minted by The Singapore Mint. The 4th Lunar Coin Series demonstrates the characteristics of Macau’s World Heritage Sites and showcases the unique blend of Macau’s Chinese and Portuguese culture through the tasteful design elements and innovative craftsmanship.
The obverse design of the coin features the graceful slithering snake, portrayed with lustrous emerald green coloured Portuguese-inspired patterned tiles. Embellishing the background are lotuses, the city flower of Macau, adding to the intricacy of the coin design. The accompanying texts are also thoughtfully arranged to resemble the Map of the Macau Peninsula.
The reverse design of the coin features the Lilau Square, which is intricately minted with high relief minting technique. In the past, the ground water of Lilau served as Macau’s main source of natural spring water. Lilau Square was also one of the earliest Portuguese residential quarters in Macau. Built along the gentle mountain slope, this area encompasses Portuguese architectures situated along Lilau Alley. Presented from a bottom-up perspective, the coin design features the Lilau fountain as its key element, along with a vintage street lamp. The apartments alongside which have louvre windows paired with red-tiled sloping roofs exude a distinct European charm.
