2013 Macau Series III Silver Snake Coin

An elegantly placed snake over a vibrant display of golden orchids is featured on the obverse side of the coin, accentuating the contrast between the snake’s silver sheen and the bright colours of the flowers. Orchids are attractive features in many oriental paintings and potteries as they are emblems of fertility, beauty and mortality. These fragrant flowers are a personal favorite of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Confucius, who called it a “flower of Nobel character” that justly evokes the qualities of Confucius.

The reverse side of the coin features the Ruins of St. Paul’s, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Historic Centre of Macao. This monument has attracted a myriad of tourist footfalls over the years and has emerge as a competing tourism hotspot.

The 2013 Macau Series Snake silver is the sixth coin in the popular Macau lunar series. It is the last coin minted before the mint raised its quantity from six thousand issues to eight thousand due to the increasing popularity of the series with collectors.
