1989 Hong Kong (Royal Visit) Gold Proof Medal-“Crown Size”
Commemorating the First Ever visit to Hong Kong of Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales, November 1989, the British Royal Mint has issued a limited edition of Royal Visit 1989 Gold medal.
The distinctive design of the obverse depicts the Royal Couple at the ribbon cutting ceremonies of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre- Symbols of Hong Kong’s prosperity through trade and cultural development. The Couple are shown in high relief against a background of the buildings. The Medal circumference bears the historic occasion title ” Visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales 1989″.
The reverse features the Official Seal of Hong Kong, created by the decree of Queen Victoria in 1842. Below the mangnificently emblazoned Hong Kong of Arms, English and Chinese trading vessels ply the harbour, symbolising the early prosperity that continues today.
Medal designs were created by senior Sculptor/Engraver to the British Royal Mint, Robert Elderton. Highly respected for his artistry, Mr Elderton has devoted 25 years of his life to the design and modeling of numerous coins and medals for the mint.
